When a bill arrives, a statement is needed or a policy must be found, most households start a search: the drawer, the cupboard, a bag in the closet.

A home money corner turns that search into a thirty-second reach.

What it is

One dedicated place, a shelf, a box or a small cabinet, where all important financial and personal documents live. Not a pile. A system.

What goes in

Insurance: policies, receipts, beneficiary forms and the contact for claims.

Banking: account details (not passwords), statements you need to keep, loan papers.

Property and vehicles: titles, contracts, registration.

Identity and family: copies of IDs, birth and marriage certificates.

Taxes and employment: contracts, certificates and records.

Medical: important records, prescriptions and HMO details.

A simple structure

  • A folder per category, clearly labelled.
  • A “to do” folder for items that need action.
  • A one-page index on top: what exists, where it is, and who to call.

Keep digital copies

Scan or photograph the key documents and store them securely, with a trusted backup. Remember to keep passwords in a proper password manager, not in the folders.

Tell someone

Make sure at least one trusted person knows where the corner is and how to open it. If something happens to you, they won’t have to guess.

Maintain it in ten minutes a month

File new papers. Remove expired ones. Check the index.

Do it this weekend

Gather everything in one place. You’ll probably find a forgotten policy or a missing document. That’s exactly why it’s worth doing.
